Bayern Munich defeated Barcelona 3-0 at home to send their opponents down to the Europa League. This is the second time that Barcelona have been defeated 3-0 by the German giants this season, and their third time including the loss against Benfica.
The scoring opened courtesy of Thomas Muller. The German international scored his 50th Champions League goal with a header from a tight angle. Barcelona also happens to be his favourite opponent to score against, since he has eight goals in seven appearances against them.
The visitors lost Jordi Alba to an injury to further add to their woes, and were 2-0 down by half time. Leroy Sane struck an absolute rocket from long range to add to the lead. It was a shot that Marc Andre ter Stegen should have dealt with, but somehow missed, and Sane now has an excellent goal to show for it.
There was a visible gap in the quality of play, with Bayern Munich’s conviction running the game. Barcelona did create a number of chances, but the lack of attempts at goal could barely shift the balance in play. Jamal Musiala netted a simple tap-in for the third goal, with Kingsley Coman crossing the ball from the byline and the Barca defence falling asleep around the German.
With this result, Bayern Munich now have 18 goals against Barcelona in their last four matches against them. The Blaugrana will have to compete on Thursdays and the weekend in the Europa League. And given the current situation, they do not have the depth to compete on both fronts.
