Bayer Leverkusen set new undefeated record: 33 games without losing

Bayer Leverkusen have set a new record in German football history by becoming the team with the longest unbeaten streak. Die Werkself have now gone 33 games without being defeated, overtaking the previous holders of the record, Bayern Munich.

Xabi Alonso’s side are also the favourites to end the hegemony of Die Roten when it comes to the Bundesliga title. They are now eleven points clear at the top of the table, although their rivals have a game in hand. And as a result, they are now emerging as the favourites to go on and end Bayern’s 11-year streak of winning the Bundesliga winner’s shield.

Alonso has quickly emerged as one of the top managers in Europe, especially after defeating Bayern 3-0 in a crucial game for the title race. He guided his team to a 2-2 draw earlier in the season, truly taking over from the record shield winners.

He is now a man in demand. Both his former clubs, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, will be looking for new managers in the summer. Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel are both set to leave their respective clubs at the end of the season and Xabi Alonso is on the shortlist of both clubs.

The Spaniard has refrained from addressing these rumours right now, insisting that he is committed to Leverkusen. But in the summer, he could have a difficult decision to make when it comes to his managerial career.

Bayer Leverkusen have been drawn against Azerbaijani club Qarabag in the Europa League, and are also looking like the favourites to go on and win the tournament in the summer.
