Sunny Deol’s post-Gadar 2 hot streak just hit a speed bump. His Independence Day release Batwara 1947 opened to a muted response at the ticket counters, marking his weakest start since his 2022 theatrical comeback.

Batwara 1947 Day 1 Numbers: A Quiet Start

The film, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, collected an estimated Rs 4.50–5 crore on opening day — the lowest of Deol’s “2.0 era,” even trailing his earlier release Jaat.

Detail	Figure
Day 1 Collection	~Rs 4.50–5 crore
Director	Rajkumar Santoshi
Clash	Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2
Genre	Period drama (non-action)
Key Cast	Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol

Why the Slow Start?

A few factors seem to be working against the film. Its pre-release promotions failed to generate the same buzz as Deol’s recent hits, and unlike his signature action-hero image, Batwara 1947 leans into a period drama rather than the punchy, dialogue-driven films audiences associate with him. It also opened head-to-head against Awarapan 2, which had a stronger start.

There’s a silver lining, though — word of mouth is reportedly decent, and the film now needs a solid push over the Independence Day holiday and a good hold through its opening weekend to have any real shot at recovery.

The Deol-Santoshi Connection

This marks the fourth collaboration between Sunny Deol and director Rajkumar Santoshi, following cult classics like Ghayal and Damini. Deol remains one of Bollywood’s most enduring action stars, with a career spanning over four decades and more than 100 films.
