Barcelona are set to compete in the Champions League next season, in spite of the ‘Enriquez Negreira’ corruption case. The body that gives out the licence to compete in the Champions League has found no proper wrongdoing on the part of the club. And as a result, they are expected to give out the licence before May 15.
Club president Joan Laporta held a press conference explaining the entire situation. UEFA are currently investigating the entire matter, and are unlikely to hand out a punishment to them for their involvement. The main reason being that there is no evidence with regards to ‘Was there a clear incompatibility between the position of the Referees Committee and Enriquez’s company?’
Barcelona to play in the Champions League next season in spite of corruption case
Since there is no evidence that can prove Enriquez Negreira’s connection to match referees and influence over results, it is currently not possible for UEFA to consider their association illegal.
Laporta has maintained that Negreira was consulted only for technical advice. And that narrative has been reiterated time and time again.
Barcelona are currently at the top of the La Liga table and are likely to finish as the champions this season. They have an eleven point lead with only seven games more to play – and it seems only a matter of time before they have the title again.
