Barcelona’s 2024–25 Champions League journey saw them return to the competition’s top tier with a strong showing that ended in the semi-finals against Inter Milan.

However, hopes of repeating or bettering that run next season have hit a roadblock, as the club has reportedly breached UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations for a second consecutive year — an infraction that could result in significant sporting consequences.

Financial Trouble Looms Over Camp Nou Again

The Catalan giants have long been grappling with economic instability, despite efforts to stabilize their books. Barcelona’s financial mismanagement over recent seasons has become a recurring issue, affecting not just transfers but also player registrations. Last season, they were only able to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor during the second half of the campaign, due to ongoing budgetary restrictions and compliance issues.

Despite attempts to maneuver around La Liga and UEFA’s financial controls, the club’s woes continue to surface. According to a report from The Times (via Marca), Barcelona have now fallen foul of UEFA’s FFP regulations for the second year in a row — a violation that could lead to sporting penalties in European competitions.

UEFA Expected to Enforce Stricter Penalty

Barcelona were previously fined €500,000 for their first FFP offence in 2024. But repeat violations are treated with greater severity under UEFA’s current enforcement framework. While UEFA has not officially confirmed the exact punishment, it is anticipated that the governing body will announce disciplinary measures in the coming weeks.

“UEFA are expected to release details on the matter in the coming weeks,” the report notes. In contrast, Premier League sides Chelsea and Aston Villa, who also reportedly breached FFP, are expected to face lighter consequences due to their status as first-time offenders.

Potential Penalties: Squad Restrictions or Points Deduction

The possible sanctions for Barcelona are expected to extend beyond financial penalties this time. One of the main outcomes discussed in the report is a reduction in the Champions League squad size. Under such a punishment, new manager Hansi Flick may only be permitted to register a limited number of players instead of the standard 25-man roster for the 2025–26 European campaign.

Another reported consequence could be a points deduction at the start of the group stage, putting Barcelona at a disadvantage even before their continental campaign kicks off. Either scenario would deal a significant blow to Flick’s tactical plans and to Barcelona’s ambitions of reclaiming their status among Europe’s elite.

A Warning Sign for Sporting Ambitions

This development arrives at a particularly sensitive time for Barcelona, who are in the midst of rebuilding under a new coaching regime and dealing with several transfer decisions. With player registration already proving problematic in domestic competition, any additional restrictions from UEFA could derail progress on both fronts.

Moreover, such consequences would send a strong message to other top European clubs regarding the seriousness with which UEFA is now approaching repeat FFP violations. The differential in potential punishment between Barcelona and first-time offenders like Chelsea and Aston Villa emphasizes the cost of non-compliance.
