Barcelona Femeni are the biggest team in Women’s football right now. This season, they have been able to maintain an unbelievable 100% win rate across all competitions, and recently set a new attendance record as well.

Only weeks after they were able to fill out Camp Nou to face arch rivals Real Madrid, they did the same again, attracting a crowd of 91,648 for their Champions League game against German league leaders Vfl Wolfsburg.

The story of Barcelona Femeni’s success

Things weren’t always easy for the women of Barcelona, as they had to train on community pitches earlier. These pitches would also be used for rugby and other sports which would render them in a very poor condition. In the 2010s, Barcelona decided to have a clear plan for the women’s team, and they decided to emulate the same plan that worked so well for the men’s team.

Instead of spending money to sign players from abroad, they invested in academy players which would help maintain the DNA of the club. Now, the majority of the squad consists of Catalonian players that have come through the famous La Masia academy.

Barcelona Femeni were able to make it to the finals of the Women’s Champions League in 2019, but were thrashed 4-1 by Lyon. And since then, they have been training harder and are now reaping the rewards. The team has a distinct tiki-taka playing style, and won the Champions League in 2021.

As a result, they are now the talk of the town in Barcelona, and are inspiring women across the world to pursue the sport further.
