Axel Witsel is in talks with Atletico Madrid for a potential transfer this summer. The Belgium international left Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season, upon the expiry of his contract and is now looking for a new club.
Marseille were in talks with the player for a potential transfer, but the deal was not fully agreed. And by the looks of things, the discussions have completely fallen through. The midfielder now prefers a move to Diego Simeone’s team, with negotiations between the two parties underway.

According to reports in Belgium, the 33-year-old will be signing a one-year deal with the Rojiblancos, along with the option to extend for a further year. Barring a last minute swerve, the deal is now expected to go through with an announcement expected next week.
The defensive midfielder made 144 appearances for Borussia Dortmund over the last few years. This past season, he had a tough time with injuries and had to be on the sidelines for a while. He has mentioned that he wants to be a part of the Belgium squad for the World Cup in winter. And so, he will have to compete at the highest level, which is possible through Atletico Madrid.
Axel Witsel would be the first big signing for Atletico Madrid this summer, as they hope to bounce back from a third placed finish in the league following them losing their title.
