Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the biggest superhero movie ever made, but its latest trailer has fans buzzing for an unexpected reason: a beloved robotic sidekick just got a redesign nobody saw coming, and he’s not the only one facing a makeover.
Avengers: Doomsday: HERBIE’s Big Redesign
The Fantastic Four’s robot assistant HERBIE, who debuted in 2025’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, looks noticeably different in the new Doomsday trailer. His once-detailed design has been simplified — bigger blue glowing eyes, a more metallic body, and an oversized “4” logo on his chest. Many fans see it as a step down from his original look, especially since his design hadn’t changed at all in the four years between First Steps and Doomsday on the MCU timeline.
Other Major Character Changes in Doomsday
| Character | Actor | What’s Changing |
|---|---|---|
| HERBIE | N/A (CGI) | Simpler, more metallic redesign with bigger glowing eyes |
| Steve Rogers | Chris Evans | Ditches the Captain America suit for casual streetwear |
| Red Guardian | David Harbour | New “New Avengerz” suit covered in brand logos |
| Mystique | Rebecca Romijn | First full costume, moving away from bare blue skin |
Steve Rogers Trades the Shield for Streetwear
Chris Evans is officially back as Steve Rogers, but this time without the classic red, white, and blue suit. The trailer shows him in a plain black jacket, t-shirt, and dark pants — a clear signal that his story has moved past the Captain America mantle, even as he still proves capable of wielding Mjolnir.
Red Guardian’s Sponsor-Covered Suit
David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov returns in the wild “New Avengerz” costume first teased in Thunderbolts*’s post-credits scene, complete with logos for real-world brands like Xbox, Tide, and Peloton. Whether he keeps this look for the full movie or returns to his classic red suit is still unclear.
Mystique Finally Gets a Proper Costume
Rebecca Romijn returns as Mystique for the first time since her 2011 cameo in X-Men: First Class, now wearing a blue-and-white dress inspired by her comic look instead of going costume-free. Fans are largely excited about the outfit, though some have raised questions about how her blue makeup translates on screen.
With a cast this massive, redesigns were always going to spark discussion — but whether these changes land will only become clear when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters.
