Avatar 5 is officially scheduled for release on December 19, 2031—exactly six years from today. As the concluding chapter of James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga, the fifth installment will arrive 22 years after the original Avatar, marking the end of one of cinema’s most ambitious storytelling journeys.

What We Know About Avatar 5
Producer Jon Landau revealed that part of Avatar 5 will take place on Earth, with Neytiri visiting the planet. This marks a significant shift from previous films, which primarily focused on Pandora. Cameron has considered “Avatar: The Quest for Eywa” as a possible title, though final names haven’t been confirmed.
The fifth film will conclude the overall storyline that began in Avatar: The Way of Water, bringing resolution to the meta-narrative connecting all sequels. There will be Earth scenes in Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, suggesting the story will be about saving Earth and humanity from extinction.
Production Status and Contingencies
Avatar 5’s production depends heavily on Avatar: Fire and Ash’s box office performance. In January 2019, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are being developed but haven’t been officially greenlit by Disney. Cameron is waiting to see audience response before committing fully to production.
Interestingly, Avatar 5 takes place in the same timeframe as Avatar 4, specifically the same period after the movie’s first third where there is a time jump. This unique timeline structure means portions of both films were shot simultaneously to account for aging child actors.
The Delay History
Avatar 5 has faced numerous postponements. Originally scheduled for 2025, the film was pushed to 2027, then 2028, and finally 2031 due to various factors including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. That’s four years after Fire and Ash’s debut, which is a full year longer than the gap between the previous sequels.
Actress Zoe Saldaña reflected on the timeline: “Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out. I was 27 when I shot the very first ‘Avatar.'”
Beyond Avatar 5
While Avatar 5 represents Cameron’s original franchise conclusion, the legendary filmmaker has confirmed he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7. However, Cameron acknowledged he likely won’t direct future installments, suggesting other filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez could continue the saga.
The Avatar franchise has grossed over $5.2 billion worldwide, with each film requiring massive investment and years of production. For more updates on Avatar 5 developments and upcoming sci-fi releases, stay tuned to our coverage.
