Augsburg were able to pick up a surprise 1-0 win over Bayern Munich. Mergim Berisha scored the only goal of the game at the hour mark, latching onto a loose ball from a free kick to give his side the lead, and eventually, all three points.
The defending champions have been handed their first loss of the season, which came in the Bavarian derby. They have now gone four games without a win in domestic competitions, and have dropped to fourth in the table.
Bayern Munich stunned by Augsburg in the Bundesliga
The Bavarian’s record of scoring in 87 consecutive Bundesliga games has been broken, with the team failing to find the back of the net. They were almost unrecognisable from the side that beat Barcelona in the middle of the week.
Augsburg sat in a deep block, and defended very solidly. The narrow system implemented by Julian Nagelsmann prevented any space from opening up, and as a result, it was really difficult for the visitors to play their usual brand of attacking football.
Despite Bayern Munich having 76% of the ball, they were unable to make the most out of it. And right now, they will have to regroup and find a solution on playing against teams that sit deep and play on the counter. The absence of Lewandowski has not helped their case, and for the first time in a while, we could be seeing a title race in Germany open up.
