ATK Mohun Bagan to be renamed as Mohun Bagan Super Giants – Sanjiv Goenka confirms after 22/23 ISL title win
After years of protests, ATK Mohun Bagan will undergo a name change to become Mohun Bagan Super Giants next month. The decision has been confirmed by the owner of the club, Sanjiv Goenka, following their 22/23 ISL title win over Bengaluru FC.
Calls to drop the prefix have been rampant from the fans for several seasons. The main cause driving them was the fact that ATK FC existed independently before Mohun Bagan’s merger from the I-League.
ATK Mohun Bagan to undergo a name change to Mohun Bagan Super Giants
Much like their ISL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants, Sanjiv Goenka’s initials will still be on the football club name. Although the team was originally known as Mohun Bagan Athletic Club, the tradition of having the sponsor name as part of the club in some form will continue.
In the past, the club carried the name McDowell Mohun Bagan in the I-League. The difference now is that the name of the previous club will be removed.
Mohun Bagan Super Giants will be competing in the Super Cup, as well as the AFC Cup if they can qualify in the coming months. Last season, they were able to make it to the AFC Cup group stages following their semi-final exit against Hyderabad FC. This season, they will have to play a qualifier against Hyderabad FC to determine who makes it to the continental tournament.
