As per information obtained by Techlusive, Asus is gearing up to release a successor to its ROG Ally gaming handheld later this year. The revelation came during an interview with Asus India VP Arnold Su following the launch event for the Asus ZenBook 14 OLED in India.

Su stated that the company is likely to unveil the second generation of the handheld gaming console in the coming year. While discussing the upcoming ROG Ally 2, Su disclosed that the device will continue to operate within the Windows ecosystem but with a heightened focus on gaming.

For those outside India, the interview also touched upon less captivating topics, such as the market penetration of the handheld in India compared to other regions. It was revealed that Asus managed to sell approximately 70,000 to 80,000 units of the Asus ROG Ally in the densely populated country.

Readers are eagerly anticipating details about the enhancements Asus plans to incorporate into the ROG Ally 2. Unfortunately, initial specifications were not discussed during the interview between the source and the Asus India VP. Despite the lack of specific details, enthusiasts are speculating on potential improvements for the ROG Ally 2. Areas of potential enhancement include software, ergonomics, and battery life—highlighted as shortcomings in the previous model based on a review from May of the previous year.

One significant target for an upgrade is the processor, with the possibility of Asus opting for an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme SoC, building on the Zen 4 and RDNA 3 architectures. Alternatively, an improved version of the Ryzen 7 7840HS or a newer series of APUs could be considered. The speculation discounts the likelihood of Asus shifting to Intel, unlike MSI’s Claw.

In addition to addressing previously identified issues, Asus might explore changes in screen size, opting for an OLED panel over an IPS one. While the existing 16GB of LPDDR5 may not need an immediate upgrade, an introductory 1TB of base storage could be welcomed, given the size of modern Windows games. With the handheld market becoming increasingly competitive, it will be crucial for Asus to maintain a reasonable price point for the ROG Ally 2.
