Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran Set for €77m Move to Al Nassr: Medical Imminent

Aston Villa’s Colombian forward, Jhon Duran, is on the verge of completing a €77 million transfer to Saudi Arabian giants Al Nassr. Set to undergo a medical in London on Thursday, the 21-year-old is primed to make the move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL) after a breakthrough agreement between Villa and the Middle Eastern club.

This transfer deal, which includes additional performance-based add-ons, represents a significant shift for both the player and his current club, who will now refocus their attention elsewhere for squad strengthening.

The Transfer Agreement

hon Duran’s impending move to Al Nassr marks a major chapter in his professional career. Aston Villa and Al Nassr have reportedly reached a comprehensive agreement for the young Colombian international’s transfer, valued at €77 million (£64.5 million), with potential add-ons to follow. This agreement sets the stage for Duran to sign a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Saudi side. His departure would be a notable one for Villa, as Duran has been a key player in their attack this season.

Aston Villa’s swift decision to finalize the deal follows a period of strong negotiations with multiple clubs interested in the forward. West Ham United had previously lodged a £57 million bid earlier in the month, but Villa turned down their offer, holding firm on their valuation. Duran’s exceptional form at Villa Park has undoubtedly increased his market value, with Al Nassr stepping up their pursuit after failing to secure their summer target, Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface.

Personal Terms Already Finalized

Personal terms for Duran’s move to Al Nassr have already been agreed upon, meaning that the only remaining hurdle before the transfer can be confirmed is the completion of his medical examination. The young forward will reportedly commit to a long-term contract that will see him play in the Saudi Pro League until 2029. This new chapter promises to be one where Duran can continue his rise in the global footballing landscape, joining a club that boasts some high-profile names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and Aymeric Laporte, all former European-based stars.

Duran’s Impact at Aston Villa

Since joining Aston Villa from Chicago Fire for an initial fee of £17.75 million in January 2023, Duran has made a substantial impact in the Premier League. Over the course of 78 appearances, the Colombian forward has netted 20 goals, with 12 goals coming in just 29 games this season. His adaptability in both starting and substitute roles demonstrates his resilience and versatility in the attack. Despite only starting seven matches this term, Duran has consistently contributed to Villa’s offensive prowess, making him a sought-after talent.

His ability to find the back of the net, even in limited starts, has been key to Villa’s successful run, and his departure is a blow to their squad depth. Villa fans and management alike will undoubtedly feel the void left by the 21-year-old’s exit, but the club will now be focusing on securing reinforcements for their forward line.

Nassr’s Ambitions and European Influence

Al Nassr, under the guidance of Stefano Pioli, finished second in the Saudi Pro League last season, and their ambition to dominate the competition remains strong. Currently sitting fourth in the league, they are eight points behind the leaders, Al Hilal, and second-placed Al Ittihad. Al Nassr’s signing of Duran will add to their already star-studded roster, featuring well-known names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, and Aymeric Laporte.

The Saudi club’s strategy to bring in top-tier talent from Europe aligns with their vision of establishing themselves as a footballing powerhouse in Asia. Duran’s arrival is another step in this direction, reinforcing the club’s commitment to building a competitive squad capable of winning both domestic and international titles. This signing could also help the club bridge the gap between themselves and the SPL’s top teams.

Villa’s Future Plans

As Jhon Duran’s transfer to Al Nassr nears completion, Aston Villa’s focus will now shift to strengthening their squad. With Ollie Watkins still being pursued by Arsenal, Villa will look to keep hold of their star English forward, who has become an integral part of their plans. While Villa has rejected Arsenal’s recent approach for Watkins, they will need to move quickly in the transfer market to replace Duran’s attacking contributions.

This transfer marks a pivotal moment in Villa’s strategy, signaling a potential shift in focus as they aim to bolster other areas of their squad. Manager Unai Emery will need to address the challenge of filling the gap left by Duran while continuing to build on the momentum from a strong start to the season.
