Aston Villa sack Steven Gerrard after 11 months in charge

Aston Villa have sacked Steven Gerrard following their 3-0 loss to Fulham in the Premier League. The decision was announced only hours after full-time, which saw the Midlands club put up yet another disappointing performance.

The former Liverpool midfielder spent almost a year in charge of Villa, after joining them from Rangers. Gerrard had a successful time in Scotland, guiding his team to the league title and impressing in the Europa League as well. But, things have not clicked for him this season at Villa Park.

Aston Villa announce departure of Steven Gerrard

“Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect,” the official statement read.

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”

Despite investing heavily in the transfer market this summer, there hasn’t been a significant return in terms of results. The team is currently 17th in the table with only nine points so far.

“It’s tough but I’m a man, I accept it, I understand it. We’ll see what happens — I’m a fighter, I will never ever quit anything”, Gerrard said after the loss against the London club.

“Quitting is not in my DNA. But the reality is that it’s not good enough for this club,” he added.

The full-time quotes did not age well, since he would be relieved of his duties shortly after.
