Assam’s flood crisis has taken a grim turn this week. Seven more lives were lost in the last 24 hours, pushing the state’s flood death toll to 75, even as the number of affected residents showed a slight dip to 3.32 lakh, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
All seven fresh casualties were reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district. The disaster continues to grip seven districts — Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup Metropolitan — spanning 21 revenue circles and 622 villages.

Government Response and Relief Efforts
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced relaxed norms for compensation, raising ex gratia support to Rs 9 lakh for families of the deceased. Notably, families of those still missing will now receive the full amount if bodies aren’t recovered within a month, easing a previous requirement of mandatory post-mortem reports.

For the four worst-affected districts — Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat — the state will also provide an interim relief amount to help families manage immediate household needs. Students in Sivasagar and Charaideo will receive support for uniforms, textbooks, and educational grants.
Rescue and relief operations remain underway with support from the Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, and civil volunteers. Beyond human toll, the floods have submerged over 45,000 hectares of cropland and damaged homes, schools, and anganwadi centres. Assam, crossed by the mighty Brahmaputra River, sees recurring monsoon flooding almost every year, though officials note this season’s intensity has strained relief infrastructure considerably.
Authorities continue to monitor water levels closely as relief work proceeds in the hardest-hit regions.
