Asian Games 2026 Day 9: India Bags 8 Medals, But Gold Stays Just Out of Reach

If Day 9 had a theme, it was “so close.” India stormed the podium eight times in Aichi-Nagoya, including a javelin double podium, yet the top step stayed frustratingly out of reach. Here’s the full story, minus the scrolling.

Asian Games Day 9 Medal Haul

India’s tally after Day 9: 4 Gold, 20 Silver, 21 Bronze (45 medals), placing 12th on the table.

The Javelin Double Podium

The men’s javelin was the emotional peak. With defending champion Neeraj Chopra out through injury, Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav carried India’s hopes. Rohit held the podium early, and Yashvir climbed to silver with a personal-best 85.72m on his sixth and final attempt.

Rohit’s last throw was invalid, but his 84.35m was enough to secure bronze. The gold, though, was never in play: Rumesh Pathirage improved to 88.55m on his final throw, stretching his lead further.

Esha Singh’s Redemption Story

Shooting delivered one of the day’s best storylines. Esha Singh scraped into the 25m pistol final by finishing 8th in qualification, while Manu Bhaker (11th) and Rahi Sarnobat (30th) missed out. Esha then turned the final into a silver medal, a reminder that the last qualifying spot can still lead to a podium.

Track Highlights

• Gulveer Singh clinched silver in the 1500m, while Yoonus Shah finished 9th.
• Murali Sreeshankar confirmed silver with an 8.07m jump in his second attempt, even though he missed his last two jumps.
• Parul Chaudhary took 5000m bronze in 15:14.61.
• Avinash Sable finished 4th in the 3000m steeplechase (8:21.67), just off the podium.
• The women’s 4x100m relay team finished 4th with a season-best 43.57s.
• The men’s 4x400m relay team won its heat in 3:01.49 to reach the final.

Beyond the Track

Not everything was about athletics. India’s men’s hockey team crushed Bangladesh 10-0 in Pool A, and the men’s volleyball team beat Hong Kong 3-0. In squash, India won several team ties, including 3-0 wins over China and South Korea in the men’s event. Boxing was strong too: Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya all won their quarter-finals 5-0. Cricket’s quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned, and India advanced on higher ranking.

Why It Matters?

India has just four golds so far, and only one of them comes from a sport other than cricket or kabaddi. Silver and bronze are piling up, so the gap between good and great is now the story. Fine margins, like the one in the javelin, are what Day 10 needs to flip.
