Ashique Kuruniyan’s Misfortune on National Duty

In a significant setback for both Ashique Kuruniyan and Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG), the talented attacker suffered an ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injury during India’s King’s Cup match against Iraq on September 7. This unfortunate incident has left a cloud of uncertainty hovering over his participation in the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 season.

The Details of Ashique’s Injury

Ashique gave his all on the field, playing for 57 minutes before being forced to exit due to the injury. Rahim Ali replaced him, marking the moment when concerns began to mount for both Ashique and his club.

Mohun Bagan’s Concerns with Medical Treatment

MBSG officials were not pleased with the initial medical treatment that Ashique received while on national duty. According to a report by News, it has been alleged that the Indian team’s medical staff did not conduct an essential MRI on Ashique, initially downplaying the seriousness of the injury. He was subsequently sent back to the club. The source even suggested that Ashique might have sustained a 40% tear in his ACL.

“For a span of five days, his injury was left unattended, and there was a conspicuous absence of an MRI scan, which is not in line with the standards we anticipate from a Team India physio,” he emphasized.

“Having conducted an MRI at an earlier stage would have enabled us to initiate physiotherapy sooner, potentially reducing the severity of the injury.“

“In light of this incident, we have completely ruled out the possibility of allowing our players to participate in the Asian Games,” he stated firmly.

Furthermore, the team official mentioned that if Ashique’s injury turns out to be long-term, Mohun Bagan may also explore the option of seeking compensation.

Uncertainty Looms Over Ashique’s Recovery

The extent of Ashique’s injury and the duration of his absence from the pitch remain uncertain. A crucial doctor’s board meeting scheduled for Tuesday night is expected to shed light on the full scope of his injury. This information is eagerly awaited by both Ashique and Mohun Bagan, as it will determine their course of action going forward.

Liston Colaco’s Situation Complicated

The injury to Ashique has raised additional complications for MBSG. The club is now hesitant to release Liston Colaco, who has been called up for the Asian Games. A source within MBSG expressed their concerns, stating, “We couldn’t possibly release Liston if Ashique Kuruniyan is injured for a lengthy period. We can’t go into the game without two of our premier wingers.”

Upcoming Challenges for Mohun Bagan

Following the AFC Cup match, Mohun Bagan Super Giant is scheduled to host Punjab FC on September 23 to kick off their 2023-24 ISL campaign. Ashique’s injury during national duty comes as a significant setback, especially considering the demanding schedule ahead. The Mariners now find themselves in a situation where they must manage the care and recovery of their star player.

AIFF’s Efforts to Secure Top Players

In response to the Asian Games and the need to send the strongest possible team to China, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) held an Emergency Executive Committee (EEC) meeting. The AIFF explored various options to secure the release of top-ranked players from ISL clubs. However, their efforts have faced resistance from the clubs, who are reluctant to part with their first-choice players.

Club vs. Country Saga Continues

The struggle between club commitments and national duty has intensified with Ashique Kuruniyan’s injury. Despite the AIFF naming Sunil Chhetri, Gurpreet Sandhu, and Sandesh Jhingan as the three overage players allowed in each team for the Asian Games, clubs are not obliged to release players for this tournament, as it falls outside the FIFA international window. The injury to Ashique adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing debate of club vs. country interests.

Ashique Kuruniyan’s ACL injury and the subsequent concerns of Mohun Bagan Super Giant have cast a shadow over the upcoming ISL season and highlighted the ongoing challenges of balancing club and national commitments in Indian football. As both the player and the club await further medical assessments, the footballing community watches with bated breath to see how this saga unfolds.

Igor Stimac’s coached team is set to kick off its campaign against the host nation, China, on September 19. Following this, they have matches scheduled against Bangladesh on September 21 and Myanmar on September 24.

However, these dates pose a significant scheduling conflict for Mohun Bagan, who are participating in both the AFC Cup and the Indian Super League (ISL).
