Jorginho has agreed to leave Arsenal and join Flamengo on a free transfer this summer. The midfielder, who arrived from Chelsea in 2023, has made up his mind after months of speculation surrounding his future. With limited opportunities this season, the 33-year-old now prepares for a long-awaited return to Brazil.

Jorginho Chooses Flamengo Over Arsenal Renewal

The Italian decided to sign for Flamengo after rejecting the chance to extend his stay in north London. The midfielder, who made 78 appearances for Arsenal since arriving from Chelsea for £12 million, began considering his options as early as January. Flamengo approached him during the winter transfer window, but Mikel Arteta refused to let him leave midway through the season. The Spanish manager valued Jorginho’s leadership and experience during a crucial campaign stretch.

Instead of renewing his deal, which expires in June, Jorginho reached a verbal agreement with Flamengo. Reports from Brazil reveal the midfielder will sign a three-year contract that runs until 2028. The move allows him to return to his homeland and fulfill a long-standing desire to play in Brazil professionally.

Veteran Midfielder Welcomes Brazilian Adventure

Jorginho expressed excitement about the next chapter in his footballing career. While speaking in January, he openly shared his dream to feature in the Brazilian domestic league.

As I’ve already mentioned, I have never played professionally in Brazil so it would be an incredible experience for me,” he said. So this door is also open, obviously. Keep all the doors open and calmly decide what to do in the future.”

Fans recently spotted Jorginho in Rio de Janeiro, fueling speculation about the move. By finalizing his agreement with Flamengo, he made it clear that he wants to play a key role in their upcoming projects and re-establish himself on South American soil.

Injury Delays Final Appearances

Jorginho currently recovers from a lung issue that has kept him away from action. Despite the setback, the Italian midfielder could still feature for Arsenal before the season concludes. Arteta may call upon him for a few final appearances, depending on his fitness.

Although he started only nine Premier League games this season, Jorginho remained a trusted squad member. He offered tactical awareness, composure, and a calming presence in midfield during crunch moments. Arteta often turned to him to stabilize games when intensity surged.

Arsenal Plan Midfield Rebuild

With Jorginho heading for the exit, Arsenal must prepare for changes in their midfield unit. The club continues contract negotiations with Thomas Partey, whose deal also runs out in June. When asked about renewal progress, Arteta said: Yes, there is progress with all the players. I’ll leave that to [sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and to talk about.”

Martin Zubimendi

Meanwhile, Arsenal have identified Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as a top target. The Spanish midfielder, who carries a €60 million (£51m) release clause, came close to joining Liverpool last year. However, he chose to remain in La Liga for another season. Now, Arsenal believe they can finalize the move to bolster their midfield ranks with fresh energy.
