Argentina edged out Brazil to a 1-0 win in a fiery World Cup 2026 Qualifier at the Maracao. A solitary goal from Nicolas Otamendi helped the reigning World Cup and Copa America winners earn a hard fought win in Brazil and end the international break on a positive note.
However, much of the drama happened pre kick off with a fight breaking out in the stands between Argentine supporters and the Brazilian police. Emiliano Martinez was seen getting involved in it, and had to be held back. This resulted in the Albiceleste walking off the pitch with captain Messi acknowledging that it was impossible to play under such circumstances. However, the match went on and Argentina defeated Brazil in the fiery fixture.
Argentina narrowly defeat Brazil in heated derby
Brazil have had to endure a dismal run, losing their first ever World Cup qualifier on home soil while also beginning a losing run of three straight games. Moreover, they have failed to produce a win in their four previous meetings against their rivals, losing thrice and drawing once.
Brazil were without Vinicius Jr and fielded Gabriel Martinelli, Rodrygo and Raphinha to lead their attack. But, they finished the game a man light with Joelinton shown a red card in the 81st minute.
The Newcastle United player didn’t start the match, but was subbed on in the 72nd minute. And within 10 minutes of staying on, he was shown a straight red card for a tussle with Rodrigo De Paul.
While the man advantage didn’t cause more damage, it squandered their chances of potentially salvaging a point from the game.
