Apple is currently working on incorporating technology into the iPad, aiming to introduce the displays, in the iPad Pro models, possibly by March 2024. This collection gathers all the details about Apple’s plans for the OLED iPad
The Upcoming 2024 OLED iPad Pro
Size Details
The upcoming OLED iPads are expected to maintain sizes similar to the existing iPad Pro models offering a smaller version of around 11.1 inches and a larger model of approximately 13.1 inches. While there are talks of future OLED iPad versions going up to 15 inches Apple’s current focus is on screen sizes.
Rumors suggest that Apple’s supplier BOE is working on developing OLED displays in sizes up to 15 inches, which could be suitable for iPads. According to insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is considering iPads more than 12.9 inches although such sizes may not be realized in the future. CAD designs of the ~11-inch and ~13-inch iPad Pro models provide a glimpse into their expected design.
OLED Progress
In comparison to the LED technology used in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, OLED technology offers benefits, like deeper blacks faster refresh rates, and improved contrast. The ability to control the brightness of each pixel in OLED displays enhances the viewing experience, for content that uses high dynamic range lighting. Additionally, OLED screens typically offer better viewing angles and efficiency compared to LED screens.
While there are some drawbacks, like screen burn-in and brightness restrictions, Apple is working on incorporating technologies to address these issues. However, it is expected that the initial OLED iPad Pro models may be priced higher due to the technology they incorporate.
M3 Chip Integration
The 2024 iPad Pro models are projected to come with the M3 chip, known for its enhanced CPU and GPU performance when compared to the M2 chip. The M3 chip, manufactured using a 3 nanometer process was first introduced in MacBook Pro and iMac devices.
Design and Camera Innovations
The Pro might introduce a facing camera positioned on one side enabling an upright orientation, in landscape mode. This contrasts with the current model’s top-positioned camera, which is upright only in portrait mode.
Pricing and Costs
Multiple rumors suggest that OLED iPad Pros will come with higher price points due to the costly OLED panels. Apple’s use of new production processes adds to the expense, with the OLED panels being sourced from Samsung and LG Display.
Potential MagSafe Integration
There’s speculation about MagSafe charging support being included in the next-generation iPad Pro, possibly through a glass-backed design. However, definitive details remain uncertain.
Enhanced Storage, Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil
Apple might offer up to 4TB of storage in the new iPad Pro models, along with a refreshed Magic Keyboard featuring a larger trackpad. Additionally, rumors suggest a third-generation Apple Pencil with interchangeable magnetic tips may accompany the updated iPad Pro lineup.
