Apple’s 2021 M1 iPad Pro might have a powerful processor but comes with a weak display

Apple’s newly launched 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 came in the market with a bang, and many have conducted a thorough performance review of the device. Some sources who were testing the device performance and its internal structure have found some interesting details regarding the iPad Pro’s display.

It was previously reported that there were slight blur or colour changes when scrolling against black backgrounds. However, some new studies have found rather interesting details of the display characteristics such as pulse-width modulation (PWM) and Apple’s new mini LED panel responses.

Apple’s 620 nits maximum brightness (with SDR content) was found that at 100% brightness, the pulse-width modulation was 19.19 kHz. Going down to 75% and 50% didn’t affect this value, and on most brightness levels, it was measured a 19.19 kHz PWM consistently.

It was found that the 2020 12.9-inch iPad Pro has 207% higher PWM than the current 2021 M1 model. This might be due to Apple’s transition to mini LED for this generation, which may have influenced the kind of PWM controllers that Apple opted for.

However, despite having a 120 Hz refresh rate, the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro offers quite high response times. Response times for the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 seem to be on the higher side at 45 ms for combined black-to-white. It’s also about 84% higher than the 2020 12.9-inch model.

The testers have also provided a video of their tests where they check the maximum performance of Apple’s M1 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro. A full review of the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 will be coming soon, so for more information stay tuned.
