One of the, if not the biggest change Apple is considering for its budget-priced Apple Watch SE would involve moving from an aluminum build to a plastic design. This is a smart strategy to cut the production cost which in turn could help also improve pricing.

Apple Watch SE To Get Plastic Casing

The current Apple Watch SE, launched in 2022, features a premium aluminum build that offers better resemblance compared to the more expensive models of the Apple Watch. A previous update, on the other hand, made use of a ceramic back case which was later changed to nylon composite material. Apple is also considering using a rigid plastic for its next Apple Watch SE, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The change is part of Apple’s continued efforts to cut production costs.

Apple has traditionally switched up materials in the construction of the Apple Watch SE to help keep costs and fit a specific design. The 2022 transition from ceramic to a “nylon composite” back case was a significant adjustment on the cost side of things, without derived benefits oriented towards durability or key design elements.

Unfortunately, Gurman’s report doesn’t dive into what a plastic build might mean for the look and feel of such an Apple Watch SE. But if Apple does go in this new direction, it could be a game-changer for the smartwatch market by delivering something more affordable.

The drive behind going for plastic on the Apple Watch SE is simple: to save money. It costs $249 (about ₹20,475), and decreasing manufacturing prices with changes in materials might help bring down the price consumers pay. Making this strategic shift would enable Apple to be more competitive with rivals like Samsung, whose least expensive watch will set you back about ₹16,355 (translated from $199).

In the view of Apple, itself being considered an alternative material to plastic in terms of cost while trying not to fall below its high standards for quality and user experience. The shift in material is indicative of an Apple that will cater to a market changing too quickly for its out-of-date product cycle, and customers who still require their tech products to be fresh but accessible.
