Apple is reportedly contemplating the launch of its inaugural foldable device within the next few years, presenting itself as a 7- to 8-inch gadget that could potentially supplant the existing 8.3-inch iPad mini. This assertion arises from recent reports originating from The Elec, a Korean publication, which suggest that the tech giant is currently assessing a timeline for the introduction of this device, possibly between 2026 and 2027.

Reports suggest that Samsung Display and LG Display have been sending samples of 7-inch and 8-inch panels to the tech giant since last year. Among these suppliers, Samsung seems to be actively involved in developing panels for Apple compared to LG, making it the likely primary provider of such panels if Apple decides to release them in 2026.

Apple, Samsung Display, and LG Display reportedly have views on crucial components for constructing the foldable device. These components include the thin glass material, the cover window for the panel, and the hinge mechanism which plays a vital role, in how the product functions. These differences arise from varying assessments of durability and reliability.

Once mass production plans are finalized it is expected that Samsung will manufacture the panel using its 6th generation A3 or A4 OLED assembly line. This assembly line is typically used for crafting OLED panels destined for Apple iPhones.

Additionally, there are reports indicating that the tech giant is also exploring the development of a 20.5-inch device. This device would be released after introducing the 7 to 8-inch variant. There have been reports, from The Elec, Bloomberg, and Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young hinting at the possibility of a foldable device. Young had previously predicted that a tablet-like foldable device might become available, between 2026 and 2027.
