Apple is reportedly planning to launch its mixed reality device in 2022. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes in his latest edition of the Power On newsletter. “Apple is planning to unleash its own pricey device with advanced chips, displays, sensor, and avatar-based features as early as next year” Gurman writes. He says that the headset or Apple Glasses will have both Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).
Gurman adds that the new Apple AR/VR device could be expensive, and the company is planning to price them above rival devices. As per supply chain sources, Apple’s AR headset will go on sale in the second half of 2022, following AR glasses expected to release in 2023.
He also discusses whether the new Apple headset will focus only on augmented reality or it will enable one to play games. Despite adding new games to the Apple Arcade, the company has not been able to match up with the likes of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo in the gaming category. The iPhone maker, Gurman writes, is aiming for a “mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality.
For Apple’s first headset, that’s what it’s shooting for: a mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality with snappy chips and high-end displays,” Gurman said.
Speculation is rife that Apple is planning to show off a mixed reality headset in a few months through an in-person event. This would be the first major product Apple plans to release since the Apple Watch. Earlier this year, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the Cupertino giant is aiming to release the AR/VR headset by mid-2022, followed by an AR headset in 2025.
