Apple is poised to bring a new compact camera module (CCM) supplier into the mix for future MacBook configurations that may be driven by the M5 series chip in 2025, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The CCMs in the M5 MacBooks will be supplied by Sunny Optical, according to a recent investor note on Medium shared this evening by Kuo. Chinese optical lens maker to produce the CCMs in Vietnam, with compact sizing completing imaging apparatus for the new laptops.
More About the Apple M5 MacBook Camera Module
At present, LG InnoTek and Sharp are believed to be the exclusive suppliers of camera modules for MacBooks. However, the only player in Apple’s optical component supply chain that can offer both CCM and lenses as a combined offering (thus vertically integrated) is Sunny Optical. Kuo said if things go well with the MacBook shipments, then Sunny Optical could also be a supplier for future iPhone and iPad models.
Apple is expected to next update the 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 chip as soon as late 2024, possibly seeing a refresh before year’s end. Meanwhile, the updated 14-inch and 16-inch M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pros are expected to launch in late 2024. Apple is developing a next-generation MacBook Pro with a thinner design, according to Mark Gurman. Drawing on the 2024 iPad Pro, Apple is working to make all of its products thinner and lighter than anything else in their respective categories.
The 2024 MacBook Pro refresh is not set to bring design changes, though the redesigned machines with an M5 chip may launch in 2025. Apple is also said to be working on Face ID support for the Mac, and it seems likely that if this trend continues we might see the capability debut specifically in a redesigned MacBook Pro at some unspecified point down the line.
