Apple in talks with new suppliers for its custom 5G modems

With the release of new Macs, Apple is progressively shifting from Intel chips to its bespoke silicon. Furthermore, Apple is making significant progress in diversifying the supply chain for its custom-designed 5G modems for future iPhones. According to a new report, Apple is in early talks with new vendors about backend orders for its own 5G modems for future iPhones. Scroll down to learn more about the topic.

According to DigiTimes, Apple talks with ASE Technology and SPIL about packaging its proprietary 5G modem chips. According to the source, Qualcomm has partnered with both suppliers to packaging 5G chips for the iPhone. Samsung’s Snapdragon X65 5G RF modem falls into this category.

TSMC is also planning to start producing modem chips for iPhones in 2023. Apple and TSMC are also preparing to trial 5nm bespoke modem chips before transitioning to advanced 4nm technology for mass manufacturing. In addition, TSMC is working on 4nm processors for the iPhone 14, and 3nm A-series chips will be used in iPhone and iPad models in 2023. The iPhone 14 models may potentially have a longer battery life thanks to 6nm 5G RF chips, as previously reported.

Apple has been planning for a long time, and the following years will only highlight the results of their research and development efforts. Apple will be able to switch away from Qualcomm as a connectivity modem supplier due to this latest action.
