Apple slapped with a lawsuit by a patent troll over Auto Unlock feature patent infringement

Apple‘s smartwatches offer unique functionality that has been tied into the brand’s ecosystem called Auto Unlock. Via this feature, users can easily unlock their Macbooks and iPhones without the need for a password or Face ID. This feature first came out in June 2016.

The company Apple is being sued by is looking to get some cash through the lawsuit:

As per a Patently Apple report, a company called SmartWatch MobileConcepts LLC is suing the Cupertino giant on accusations of patent infringement regarding the Auto Unlock feature. The patent company is SmartWatch MobileConcepts LLC and it is referring to patent number 10,362,480 titled “Systems, Methods, and Apparatuses for Enabling Wearable Device user Access to Secured Electronics Systems.” The Ortiz family sold the patent to the firm earlier.

The report indicates that this is a case of patent trolling, the goal is to make Apple settle and earn some quick cash out of it. A patent Troll is a situation where a business concern that uses patents to go to court and make money out of them/

It is easier said than done as this may not go as SmartWatch Mobile Concepts LLC had anticipated as the above-mentioned patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on the 11th of August, 2016. Although this feature was announced much earlier during the WWDC in 2016 on Apple Watches. That year, the event was held between the 13th of June and the 17th of June, two months before any sort of patent was filed.

The court’s verdict is awaited, both the companies have not attempted to settle the matter out of court yet.
