While Apple has been manufacturing iPhones in India for many years, as per the report from The Information, the company could very soon accomplish a milestone in the Indian production line. Unlike in years past, the iPhone 17 will involve some of its initial production work at a factory in India, according to Apple.

Apple To Start Production of iPhone 17

This change is significant because it loosens up the notoriously complicated New Production Introduction (NPI) process, which is important to Apple product development. NPI includes polishing the iPhone form factor and testing multiple equipment and processes in preparation for mass production. NPI (New Product Introduction) is considered one of the toughest points for Apple as it involves extensive modifications to ensure Apple’s quality standards, typically between October and May.

This initial production shift is a small step in Apple’s effort to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on China, though China will remain a key component in Apple’s production ecosystem for the foreseeable future. The decision also further underlines Apple’s growing faith in India as a manufacturing destination when it comes to Apple factories, as the company has so far until now, placed its faith in China alone for such complex manufacturing tasks.

But reports say that NPI work in India is on the base model of the iPhone 17 series and not the Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro models have only just started being assembled in India and apart from its base model this is the first time India will handle part of the notoriously tricky NPI process outside China.

While the iPhone 17 series isn’t expected to be released for another 11 months, rumors are already emerging on the possibility of some new models. In 2025, Apple could introduce a thinner variant of the phone, possibly called the iPhone 17 Air. For the 17 Pro and an Air model that is rumored to be released, NPI will stay in China since these devices are more complex.

All in all, this change reflects the growing confidence of Apple in India as the country is putting its efforts to turn India into a manufacturing hub which would help to diversify country-based clusters based on several global geo-political reasons.
