Canalys, a research firm, has released data regarding global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2023, covering the period from January to March. The report reveals that premium devices priced above $500 MSRP accounted for 31 percent of total shipments in the quarter, marking the highest percentage in the past five years. Despite an overall contraction of 13.3 percent in the smartphone market compared to the previous year, the premium segment experienced a notable increase of 4.7 percent year-on-year.

According to the report, Apple emerged as the dominant player in the flagship segment, with four iPhone models occupying the top positions. The iPhone 14 Pro Max, which was launched the previous year, secured the first spot as the best-selling flagship device. It was followed by the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14.

The iPhone 13, introduced in 2021, claimed the fourth position on the list. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra managed to secure the fifth spot, making it the best-selling Android flagship in the market. The iPhone 14 Plus rounded out the top six, indicating that all devices from the iPhone 14 series made it to the list of the best-selling flagships in the first quarter of 2023.

The chart provided by Canalys demonstrates a significant lead for the iPhone 14 Pro Max over its Pro variant in terms of shipments. Surprisingly, the shipments of the one-year-old iPhone 13 also outperformed the current-generation iPhone 14 Plus. Additionally, the older iPhone 12 and iPhone SE (3rd Gen) found their place among the best-selling flagships in the opening quarter of the year, showcasing Apple’s strong presence across multiple device generations. In total, Apple had seven iPhones on the list, while Samsung had six devices.

Alongside the Galaxy S23 Ultra, other popular flagships from Samsung included the S23, S23 Plus, Galaxy Z Flip 4, S22, and S21 FE 5G. Among Chinese smartphone manufacturers, only Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 13 and Huawei’s Mate 50 managed to secure a position as best-selling flagships. The data presented by Canalys provides valuable insights into the global smartphone market in the first quarter of 2023, highlighting the dominance of Apple in the flagship segment and the ongoing popularity of both new and older iPhone models.
