That upgrade is made possible by a shift to WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging, replacing Apple’s older InFO_PoP setup. Instead of stacking memory dies directly on top of the SoC, WMCM places them beside it — freeing up space for a wider 96-bit memory bus while sticking with the more affordable LPDDR5X standard rather than jumping to pricier LPDDR6.

Interestingly, Apple appears to be holding the CPU core count steady at 2 performance + 4 efficiency cores, suggesting the company is prioritizing power efficiency over simply adding more cores — a strategy that’s let Apple stay competitive on single-core and multi-core performance without core-count inflation.
