Apple A17 Pro vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200 Plus

Apple A17 Pro vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Dimensity 9200 Plus: Apple has finally revealed its iPhone 15 Pro and along with it came the all-new A17 Pro SoC. The industry’s first 3nm chip has 19 billion transistors and a six-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores, as well as a 16-core neural engine capable of processing up to 35 trillion operations per second.

According to Tom’s Hardware, the A17 Pro’s single-core Geekbench 6 performance is around 10% quicker than its predecessor, the A16 Bionic, as Apple stated during their Wanderlust event. The single-core score of 2,914 for Apple’s newest chip places it in the same bracket as many desktop CPUs and is only about 10% behind the Ryzen 9 7950X (3,172) and Core i9-13900K (3,223).

However, synthetic benchmarks do not tell the complete story. For starters, the A17 Pro’s operating frequency of 3.75GHz (according to the benchmark) is significantly lower than the 5.80GHz of the Ryzen and 6.0GHz of the Raptor Lake CPUs. It also compares a mobile chip with a TDP of 7.5 – 8W to desktop CPUs with TDPs exceeding 100W.

The core count is another consideration. The A17 Pro’s six cores contribute to a multi-core score of 7,199, which is only 3% higher than the A16 Bionic, implying that Apple made little, if any, architectural modifications in their newest SoC iteration. The Ryzen 9 7950X (16 cores) more than triples the A17 Pro’s multi-core score to 22,240, while the i9-13900K (24 cores, 8 performance, 16 efficient) scores even higher at 22,744.

Qualcomm with its snapdragon gen 2 SoC is focused more towards the economy than high performance. The clock speeds are identical to those seen in the 8+ Gen 1, however the core composition is not. To achieve high single-threaded performance, the single Kryo Prime core (based on Cortex-X3) runs at 3.2GHz (3.1872GHz to be exact). This time, it is supported by four Performance cores (rather than three) to better handle multi-threaded applications; these cores run at 2.8GHz. Finally, there are three 2.0GHz Efficiency cores.

Support for newer, faster memory technology is included in Gen 2. It supports LP-DDR5X RAM at up to 4,200MHz (up from LP-DDR5 at 3,200MHz). It can use the new UFS 4.0 standard for storage (up from UFS 3.1).

The newest Adreno GPU delivers up to 25% greater performance while using up to 45% less power. Now that ray tracing hardware is available from key Android chip makers, we may see mobile game developers adopt the new technology in the same way that they did on PC and console. This GPU is also the first to support Vulkan 1.3 (as well as OpenGL ES 3.2).

Sony sensors with Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) and Samsung’s 200MP HP3 have been optimised to work with the Snapdragon ISP, according to Qualcomm. The Gen 2 includes a triple 18-bit ISP that can handle up to three 36MP cameras (30fps) at the same time or up to 200PM for a single camera. With negligible shutter latency, 108MP sensors are supported.

The chipset can record 8K HDR film at 30fps, while also capturing 64MP images, 4K at 120fps, and slow-motion videos (720p @ 960fps). It can collect up to four exposures for each frame of video using DOL sensors.

For the first time on a mobile Qualcomm device, the new Hexagon processor supports a new INT4 format. In general, the Hexagon is faster – Qualcomm claims that AI performance has been enhanced by 4.35x. That power may be harnessed to assist the camera by identifying which portions of the image are a face, hair, clothes, background, and so on and applying various processing to them.

The Dimensity 9200 Plus has CPU and GPU clock speed improvements. The huge Cortex-X3 core now runs at 3.35GHz, up from 3.05GHz. While the Cortex-A715 medium cores have increased to 3GHz from 2.85GHz. The Cortex-A510 cores continue to run at 1.8GHz. The GPU’s clock speed has been increased by 17%, though MediaTek did not provide the exact figure. The rest of the chipset is identical to the conventional Dimensity 9200.

The Dimensity 9200 Plus comes with an M80-based modem that supports mmWave 5G, a sixth-generation APU, up to 240Hz frame rate at FHD+ resolutions, 8K recording capabilities, Bluetooth 5.3, and Wi-Fi 7. The only Dimensity 9200 phone available worldwide is the vivo X90 Pro.
