Anya Taylor-Joy Just Joined Middle-earth — Here’s Who She’s Playing

Middle-earth just got a new resident, and Tolkien fans are already trying to figure out where she fits in the lore. Anya Taylor-Joy has officially joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and the role comes with a twist nobody saw coming.

Who Is Anya Taylor-Joy Playing?

Taylor-Joy will play Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm described as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil. Here’s the catch for book purists: Seren isn’t a character from Tolkien’s actual writing. She’s an original creation built specifically for this film, joining the ranks of new faces added to flesh out the story between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.

This isn’t new territory for the actress either. The casting marks her third role inside a major Warner Bros. franchise, following Furiosa and the Dune films, and her Furiosa run already proved she can anchor a prequel built entirely on mythology and world-building.

The Full Cast So Far

Director Andy Serkis is reprising his iconic role as Gollum while also sitting in the director’s chair. The ensemble around him reads like a Middle-earth reunion tour, with a few new arrivals mixed in.

Why This Casting Matters

The story is set in the gap between Bilbo’s farewell party and the Fellowship’s journey to Moria, following Aragorn and Gandalf as they race to track down Gollum before Sauron’s forces do. Adding an entirely new elf character into that hunt suggests Serkis and the writing team, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, aren’t simply retreading old ground. They’re expanding it.

That’s also exactly why fan reactions have been mixed. Some are excited to see a fresh face get real stakes in the story, while others are wary of new characters being inserted into a universe built on decades of dense, specific lore.
