Antonio Conte reveals that he wants Christian Eriksen to return to Tottenham Hotspur

Antonio Conte has hinted at Christian Eriksen’s return to Tottenham, stating it would be a ‘wonderful opportunity to work together again. Eriksen joined Brentford on a six-month agreement after completing a remarkable recovery from his heart attack in the summer, and he could feature against Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Eriksen departed Spurs in 2020 to join Inter Milan, where he won the Serie A title with Conte last season. Eriksen’s tenure in Italy was cut short due to a health concern at Euro 2020.

Word from Conte

Conte, who saw Eriksen by chance at a hotel where they were both staying last weekend, said there were no talks to bring the 29-year-old back to the north London club last month, but things could change in the summer.

Conte said: ‘Honestly I was surprised about the situation because, in my mind, I thought Christian needed more time before coming back to play in England.’

“For sure, Eriksen is part of Tottenham’s story. To come back here would be a good opportunity for him, for me, for the club. But now he’s signed for Brentford, only six months, and we’ll see what happens.”

“I was lucky because I met him on Sunday and it was good to speak with him. I saw him with his family and it was good. I’m the first person to be happy to see him again on the pitch because we spent a really good time at Inter Milan together.”

Eriksen’s Potential Return

In June, during Denmark’s European Championship group game against Finland at Parken Stadium, Eriksen fell on the field. He told his wife Sabrina on the way to the hospital in Copenhagen that he would probably never play football again after suffering a heart arrest.

That, however, suddenly altered. Days after his fall, the 29-year-old was equipped with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, and doctors gave him optimism that he might be able to play again. Eriksen was unable to continue his career with Inter Milan due to Italian restrictions regarding athletes who had the device implanted.

Yet, on the final day of the January transfer window, the Denmark midfielder was permitted to join Brentford after completing the necessary medical exams. He made almost 300 appearances for Tottenham before joining Serie A side Inter in 2019, where he played with current Spurs manager Conte.
