Antonio Conte restarts Premier League career with draw

Antonio Conte began his Premier League tenure in charge of Tottenham Hotspur with a 0-0 draw against Everton. The Toffees could have had a penalty in the second half, but the decision was overturned by VAR after Chris Kavanagh, the on pitch referee, overturned the decision by consulting the monitor.

Conte deployed his signature 3-at-the-back system at Goodison Park. Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal were assigned the wing-back positions on the two flanks. However, they lacked the clinical edge to deliver final balls into the box, or take chances themselves.

“I started to work with my players on Wednesday. We’ve had two games that were vitally important as we needed to win in the Conference League – we want to be competitive in that competition to give satisfaction to our fans.

“Then to play at Everton is not a good place for the opponent. I have seen some situations in the tactical aspects but the situations I liked were the players wanting to fight. This is the best news.

“For at this moment, the result is good. We needed a point to start. Now we need to keep close to the fourth place and be competitive to close the gap.

Spurs are currently ninth in the table, with 16 points from eleven games. In his first game in charge of Tottenham, Conte earned a 3-2 win against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League. The international break will help the Italian implement his style of play onto the team as they take on Leeds after the players return.
