Google is accustomed to launching the first beta version of the next major Android updates in May, this year, however, Google has rolled out the Android 13 Beta 1 update earlier for Pixel users. You can now install by just opting in.

The next update, Beta 2 is expected to arrive in around two more weeks, just in time for the developer conference or later on in May. Android 13 Beta 1 is an initial release and is the first to be made available with OTA or over-the-air updates. Developers should continue to test for compatibility and watch for feedback from newer users. Google has suggested devs begin early testing of Android 13 and notify of any issues faced.

Android 13 Beta 1 features:

A developer feature that Google highlighted today includes granular permissions for accessing media on your phone, instead of granting just one permission that will allow the device to access everything, now there is individual permission needed for images, videos, and audio.

The Android Beta Feedback app is available for the Pixel users, it can be accessed from the drawer or through Quick Settings to file bugs in the Google Issue Tracker, the Android Beta community is also available on Reddit.

Android 13 Beta 1 is available now for users of the following devices:

  1. Pixel 4 and Pixel 4L
  2. Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a (5G)
  3. Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a
  4. Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

The majority of users will be installing the Beta 1 update with the April security patch via the Android Beta Program site. If you are on the Android 12 QPR3 Beta Program that is set to be operational until June, you will have to opt-out of that program but not wipe your pixel device, and instead of installing the stable version of Android 12, you have to opt into the Android 13 Beta Program from the enrollment options.
