AMD Confirms its working on making Hybrid CPUs for Server and Client markets

AMD has officially confirmed its commitment to developing hybrid CPUs and advancing core counts in its next-generation designs. In a recent interview with Tomshardware, Mark Papermaster, AMD’s CTO, provided insights into the company’s future plans, which encompass hybrid chip designs, increased core counts, and the integration of AI in chip design and manufacturing processes.

Papermaster acknowledged that the industry is reaching a point where a single chip cannot cater to all needs, particularly in the server segment. Therefore, AMD is focused on delivering a diverse range of solutions within its Zen 4 EPYC lineup.

This includes various variants like Zen 4 Genoa, 3D V-Cache Genoa-X, Bergamo in Zen 4C flavors, and Siena for power-optimized platforms. Furthermore, rumors suggest that the upcoming Zen 5 and Zen 5C lineups will offer an even broader range of EPYC products.

In addition to variations in core densities, AMD aims to incorporate different types of cores in its future chip designs.

This approach aligns with the strategies employed by Intel and Apple, where high-performance cores are combined with power-efficient cores optimized for maximum efficiency. By adopting a hybrid approach, AMD will be able to stack multiple 3D layers, integrating cache or specialized accelerators tailored to specific workloads.

While AMD emphasizes the continuous advancement of higher core counts, it also recognizes that different customers have varying requirements. While some may prioritize increased core counts, others may seek additional acceleration capabilities. Papermaster confirmed that the current Ryzen 7040 CPUs offer a glimpse into the hybrid technology, assuring that more such products will be introduced in the future.

Regarding the utilization of AI in chip design and development, Papermaster stated that AMD already employs software assistance in its design processes. While AI does not replace the essential engineering work performed by humans, it plays a significant role in enhancing chip designs.

This approach aligns with NVIDIA’s efforts, as they have also leveraged AI to develop their next-generation chips and implement advanced techniques to streamline production. AMD has identified AI as its primary strategic focus and expects it to play a crucial role in its future endeavors, particularly with the upcoming hybrid designs.
