In the US, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F, new iGPU-less APUs, are now on sale at slightly lower prices than the G-series. Initially, the actual price appeared in retail outlets, although Amazon US now attaches the official MSRP and, given that, is indeed marginally lower than the 8000G counterpart.
More About the AMD Ryzen 8000F APUs
The AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU costs $299.99 US, and the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F APU costs $189.99 US on Amazon US. Still, that tiny discount doesn’t make much sense without an iGPU. For the Ryzen 7 8700F, the NPU remains on board, but the GPU is more crucial than the NPU for regular PC owners. The Ryzen 5 8400F, at $189 US, seems relatively expensive.
In comparison, the Ryzen 5 8600G comes at $229 US, and the Ryzen 5 8500G at $179 US for what is presented as a higher price an iGPU and NPU sacrifice. The only advantage over the 8500G is a slightly higher clock enabled. This could make the chips less appealing in the DIY market, not over 8500G or no reason to 8600 G. But OEMs are a different story, where a few dollars make a big difference.
What concerns performance, the Ryzen 7 8700F features 8 cores and 16 threads, and the Zen 4 core architecture, APU with a 4 cores base clock, and 4.1 GHz core boost of 5.05 GHz. The Ryzen 5 8400F features 6 cores and 12 threads, with a base clock of 4.2 GHz and a boost clock of 4.75 GHz. Both chips have 16 MB of L3 cache and lack an RDNA 3 GPU, with a TDP of 65W.
Interestingly, despite the lack of an iGPU, the NPU specifications are carried over from the Non-F SKUs.” The Ryzen 7 8700F keeps the 16 TOPS “XDNA” NPU, while the Ryzen 5 8400F “does not have NPU capabilities.” Both APUs are AM5 compatible and can be overclocked. They include a Wraith Stealth cooler for their 65W power requirements. The prices make for a solid upgrade option for current AM4 owners looking for mainstream APUs.
When combined with an affordable AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory kit, users can expect sub-$500 US systems. However, as there are no integrated graphics onboard, users will still need to purchase a separate discrete graphics card. Entry-level Radeon RX 7000 GPUs start at around $229 US (RX 7600). Both APUs will be available on May 14th.
