AMD launches new EPYC Milan CPUS

AMD’s Zen 4 architecture is already present in the market however, the demand for Zen 3 in the server and data centre markets are stilll going strong. A week ago, the chipmaker secretly added six additional SKUs to its 3rd Generation EPYC 7003 (Milan) range.

Milan was released in March 2021 and has since been replaced by the fourth generation EPYC 9004 (Genoa) series. The fact that AMD is launching new Milan CPUs nearly two and a half years after the initial launch suggests that there is still a demand to be met. Either that, or AMD is simply getting rid of excess Zen 3 chips. It adds up since AMD is shifting its focus to Zen 4 with a slew of EPYC products planned, including Genoa-X with 3D V-Cache, Bergamo, and Siena, the latter two based on Zen 4c, a denser variation of Zen 4. Then there’s the Zen 5-powered 5th Generation EPYC Turin, which will be released in 2024.

On September 5, AMD expanded its Milan portfolio after almost 2.5 years.

EPYC 7663P, EPYC 7643P, EPYC 7303P, EPYC 7303, EPYC 7203P, and EPYC 7203 are the six new Milan models. The EPYC 7663P and EPYC 7643P are single-socket versions of the EPYC 7663 and EPYC 7643, with identical specs. The good news is that EPYC 7663P and EPYC 7643P have MSRPs that are almost half of those of their ordinary counterparts.

Meanwhile, the new entry-level Milan SKUs are the EPYC 7203 and EPYC 7203P. They come with 16-thread architecture alongside a base clock of 2.8 GHz and a boost clock of 3.4 GHz. The pair also has 64MB of L3 cache and a low TDP of 120W. While their core count isn’t impressive, the EPYC 7203 and EPYC 7203P are still Milan parts and continue to provide 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes. The EPYC 7203 and EPYC 7203P are the most affordable Milan SKUs available. The EPYC 7203 has an MSRP of $348, but the EPYC 7203P is only $10 less.

The EPYC 7303 and EPYC 7303P, on the other hand, have 16 cores and 32 threads but the same 64MB L3 cache as the EPYC 7203 and EPYC 7203P. Their base clocks are 400 MHz slower, but their boost clock is the same. Despite having twice as many cores, the EPYC 7303 and EPYC 7303P draw just 10W more than the EPYC 7203 and EPYC 7203P. The EPYC 7303 and EPYC 7303P have MSRPs of $604 and $594, respectively. The price difference between 1P and 2P parts is only $10.
