Some companies chase headlines. AMD seems content letting raw numbers do the talking — and the latest TOP500 and Green500 rankings are loaded with them.

According to AMD’s newest update, the company now powers 4 of the world’s 10 fastest supercomputers and 4 of the 10 most energy-efficient systems, while contributing to a massive 191 systems on the list overall — an 11% jump year-over-year.

These aren’t just abstract rankings. Systems like El Capitan and Frontier represent some of the most powerful scientific computing machines on the planet, used for everything from climate modeling to nuclear fusion research.

Why Europe Is Leaning Into AMD

A big part of this story is happening in Europe, where AMD’s EPYC processors and Instinct GPUs are increasingly tied to sovereign AI ambitions. Eni’s new HPC7 system, ranked No. 6 globally, is supporting energy research while reinforcing Europe’s push for independent HPC capabilities. Meanwhile, the University of Cambridge has deployed the first systems powered by AMD’s Instinct MI355X GPUs, landing at No. 67 and No. 68 on the list.

Then there’s LUMI, hosted in Finland and operated by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, which continues to serve as a cornerstone for European AI research. France isn’t sitting this one out either — GENCI, the country’s national HPC agency, is building Alice Recoque, France’s first exascale supercomputer, which will run on AMD’s upcoming Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen EPYC CPUs.

Precision Still Counts

Amid all the AI buzz, AMD is making a point: double-precision (FP64) computing still matters for serious science. Climate modeling, materials simulation, aircraft design, and fusion research all depend on this level of accuracy.

That’s where the upcoming AMD Instinct MI430X GPU comes in — AMD projects it will deliver over 200 teraflops of native FP64 performance, a potential new benchmark for scientific computing as AI and HPC workloads increasingly share the same infrastructure.

High-performance computing systems like these form the backbone of modern supercomputing research worldwide, powering breakthroughs that would otherwise take years to achieve.
