AMD confirmed that an updated AMD Desktop Kit is on the road. Unlike its predecessor, the new 4800S Desktop Kit will feature Smart Access Memory technology, according to the tiny print of today’s AMD community post on the debut of Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) technology. The 4800S Desktop Kit is being mentioned for the first time by AMD.
According to previously released information, the 4800S Desktop Kit will be a considerably better product. Modern GPU support has been improved, as has storage support and AM4 standard cooler support.
The new AMD 4800S Desktop Kit, like its predecessor, is said to be a consequence of PlayStation 5 processors with integrated RDNA2 GPU issues. The new kit will probably make use of Xbox Series silicon that was previously dumped.
The most noticeable difference between the AMD 4700S and 4800S Desktop Kits is the increased GPU support. Because the earlier model only supported PCIe 2.0 cards, it couldn’t be used with anything more powerful than an AMD Polaris or a mid-range Nvidia Pascal card. To put it another way, the most powerful options would have been an RX 590 or GTX 1060. The new AMD 4800S Desktop Kit is supposed to include PCIe 4.0 (it’s unclear if it’ll be x8 or x16), but reports suggest it could also include a PowerColor Radeon RX 6600 graphics card, which would be a good CPU/GPU balancing choice.
The introduction of an M.2 slot and a Wi-Fi card on the ostensibly MSI-manufactured board is another step forward in spec. The addition of an M.2 storage slot is a nice addition to the design, as the existing model only has two SATA 6GBps connectors.
Because AMD’s new 4800S Desktop Kit goes up from mini-ITX to microATX, MSI will be able to make it a more complete package. According to previous leaks, the new kit will also have a normal AM4 cooler fitting. The air cooler that was bolted on in the prior kit had mixed reviews and reports, thus being able to use any of the readily available AM4 compatible designs here will be welcome.
