The Russos’ Take on Doom

The brothers wrote the foreword for the Premier Collection reprint of Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers: Time Runs Out, a story about the Multiverse collapsing that leads into Secret Wars. They describe Doom as “ambition and fear woven together.” In their view, he tries to hold reality together through sheer will and believes he can save everything by controlling enough of it. Hickman, they add, shows the strain and human fragility behind the armor.

They also say they’ve always been drawn to characters who reach for something noble and lose themselves along the way. For them, destruction often comes through decisions made in uncertainty, and Secret Wars becomes a story about identity, hope and the cost of wanting to save something larger than yourself.

Feige Adds His Voice

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige wrote his own foreword for the Secret Wars reprint. He calls Doom noble, loyal and true to his word, yet also a monster who seeks power over everything and will do whatever it takes. His bottom line is that there’s no Secret Wars without Doom.

Why Fans Are Cautiously Optimistic?

The Direct notes Marvel once planned Kang the Conqueror in this role, which raised concerns. The recent statements suggest the team understands Doom’s fear of failure, humiliation and powerlessness, including why he hides behind a mask. It’s still not all faithful, since reports mention changes such as a grudge against Steve Rogers and a deceased wife and son. Those may work or may stray too far from the character’s long history.

Some critics say Doom lacks the build-up Thanos had. The Direct counters that Thanos was a minor presence for years before Infinity War, so Doom can grow too. These are opinions from the outlet, and we’ll only know once the film arrives.
