All-Indian Showdown Opens Chess’s Biggest Esports Stage Yet!

Sometimes the toughest opponent isn’t a rival from across the globe — it’s someone from your own backyard. That’s exactly how the Chess at Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 Group Stage kicks off, with India’s Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin facing each other in a rematch of last year’s opener. Sixteen of the world’s top Grandmasters are now battling for the title and a share of the $1.5 million prize pool (~INR 14.3 crore).

Esports Group Stage Lineup

The Storylines To Watch

In Group A, Pranesh M opens his campaign against Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, while Polish Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda takes on Benjamin Bok, who qualified through the India Rising route. EWC 2025 runner-up Alireza Firouzja also returns to face Wei Yi in another Group Stage rematch.

Over in Group B, defending champion Magnus Carlsen of Team Liquid begins his title defense against Andrey Esipenko. Speed-chess star Hikaru Nakamura faces debutant Alexey Sarana, while Hans Moke Niemann — representing Indian organization GodLike Esports — takes on Ian Nepomniachtchi, last year’s Playoffs qualifier.

Format Breakdown

The Group Stage runs on August 12 and 13, with matches played as two games under a 10-minute time control (no increment), followed by an Armageddon tiebreaker if needed. The top four from each group advance to the Playoffs, running August 14–15 in a single-elimination bracket — quarterfinals over four games, semifinals over six, and a best-of-three-set Grand Final.

Notably, S8UL Esports’ Aravindh Chithambaram was eliminated during the Play-Ins but still walked away with $23,000 (~INR 21.9 lakh) for his run.

With India fielding multiple Grandmasters and Carlsen defending his crown, this year’s Chess EWC promises high stakes from the very first move.
