Forget forty thieves — JioHotstar’s newest release swaps them for forty ghosts, and the result is a quirky, offbeat horror-comedy that prioritizes fun over frights. Ali Baba aur 40 Bhoot dropped on September 11, and it’s already carving out a spot for viewers craving something lighter than the usual crime-drama binge.

Ali Baba aur 40 Bhoot: The Story
The series follows Alisha “Ali” Nigam (Asha Negi), a science-minded neuropsychology expert, and Baba (Vishal Vashishtha), a small-town police officer who firmly believes in ghosts and the supernatural. When Alisha’s archaeologist father mysteriously vanishes, the two are pulled into an eerie mystery involving forty restless spirits, ancient folklore, and a village where nothing is quite as it seems. Their contrasting worldviews — science versus superstition — form the show’s central comic engine.
What Reviews Are Saying
Early reviews describe the series as watchable but not particularly gripping. Critics note that while the show occasionally nails the balance between the macabre and comic — especially through characters reacting to supernatural chaos with everyday bewilderment — the humor doesn’t always land deep enough, and the horror leans more on atmosphere than genuine dread. On the technical side, the sound design and cinematography earn praise, with drone shots and an ominous haveli setting adding solid visual texture throughout.
Should You Watch It?
If you’re in the mood for a breezy, ghost-filled comedy rather than a genuinely scary watch, Ali Baba aur 40 Bhoot delivers decent entertainment value. It won’t replace top-tier horror, but its odd-couple dynamic and folklore-driven mystery make for an easy weekend watch.
