Against the Current: 4 Reasons This Historical C-Drama Deserves a Spot on Your Watchlist

Some period dramas dazzle with costumes. Against the Current does that too, but its real power lies in quiet strength, shrewd women and a love story that refuses to rush. Starring Tan Song Yun and Liu Xue Yi, it’s a feudal-China tale about survival, power and family, and it’s streaming now on Viki.

The Setup (Spoiler-Light)

Shen Jia Lan (Tan Song Yun) comes from a family of scholars. Her grandfather is the influential Grand Secretary Shen, and she’s engaged to Lin Jin Qi (Liu Xue Yi), who comes from a family of respected civil officers. When her grandfather is charged with treason, the engagement is broken off, the Shen men are executed and the women are confined.

Jia Lan is saved by a humble couple and takes on the identity of their lost daughter, Xu Lan Xiang. Years later, she enters the Lin household as a low-ranking maid, and her sharp mind soon catches the eye of Jin Qi, now a high-ranking official.

Against the Current: Drama Snapshot

4 Reasons to Watch

1. A formidable female lead. Lan Xiang rebuilds her life without letting her past define her. In a time when education was mostly for the nobility, she hides how much she knows, yet her intelligence keeps shining through. Even when treated cruelly, she stays dignified, focused on a single goal: buying her adoptive family’s freedom from servitude. Tan Song Yun plays her with an understated, lived-in calm.

2. A mature, slow-burn romance. Don’t expect dramatic music cues every time eyes meet. Jin Qi first notices Lan Xiang for her mind, not her looks, and his admiration deepens into respect over time. She, meanwhile, stays composed, seeing him as a master rather than a crush. Their bond grows gradually as two people who learn to love each other as individuals, and the show avoids the usual tropes of long-lost lovers and dramatic identity reveals.

3. Women who write their own stories. The drama paints women in shades of grey rather than black and white. Zhao Xing Tang is bitter and ruthless, shaped by a life she never chose. Du Cui Que is educated and ambitious but limited by rigid social rules. Each, in her own way, pushes against the boundaries set for her.

4. A compelling, layered narrative. From powerful families to the servants at the bottom of the ladder, every character is just trying to survive, and each defines freedom differently. The story balances courtyard politics, high-stakes conspiracies and human relationships, supported by strong performances and impressive costumes and sets.
