A Slow Burn or a Real Struggle? Daayra’s Box Office Numbers Tell a Cautious Story

Not every film explodes out of the gate — some quietly test the waters instead. “Daayra” seems to be doing exactly that, inching forward rather than surging.

The Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer has collected Rs 2.90 crore nett over its first two days at the Indian box office, showing modest growth after a particularly soft opening.

A Quiet Start, A Slight Uptick

Daayra’s opening day was undeniably weak, netting just Rs 1.10 crore — a number that signals limited initial pull despite its star-studded pairing. Saturday brought some relief, with collections climbing to Rs 1.80 crore, nearly doubling the previous day’s numbers. While this growth is a positive sign heading into Sunday, the overall scale remains modest for a film featuring names as prominent as Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

What “Daayra” Is Actually About?

The film digs into a tense ethical conflict within law enforcement, sparked by a high-profile, disputed encounter. After officer Raman Kumar and his team take action against suspects, a fellow officer, Ajooni Kohli, begins questioning whether the shooting was staged — pulling the story into a deeper institutional battle over truth and justice.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film also features Kanwaljit Singh, Achint Kaur, Anuja Sathe, Seema Azmi, and Biswapati Sarkar in supporting roles, leaning into the kind of morally complex, procedural drama Gulzar has built a reputation around.

Why the Slow Start Matters?

Films built around dense, issue-driven narratives often face a tougher time pulling in mass opening-weekend crowds compared to broader entertainers, even with recognizable lead actors. The genre tends to rely more heavily on critical reception and word-of-mouth over time rather than opening-day spectacle — a pattern frequently seen across socially conscious cinema within Bollywood, where slow-burn growth sometimes outperforms flashy first-day numbers in the long run.

Whether Daayra can sustain any real momentum will likely hinge on its Sunday performance and how critical word-of-mouth shapes its second week.
