Some wins take a moment to sink in — even for the people who helped make them happen. When director Lee Chang Dong’s “Possible Love” became the first Korean film ever to win the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival, its stars weren’t even in the room to see it happen live. But their reactions afterward made clear just how much the milestone meant.

A Win Celebrated From Afar

Jeon Do Yeon, Zo In Sung, Cho Yeo Jeong, and Sul Kyung Gu had all attended the film’s world premiere in Venice the previous week, where it reportedly earned a six-minute standing ovation. However, scheduling conflicts with the Toronto International Film Festival meant none of them could be present for the actual award ceremony on September 12. Instead, the cast shared their reactions in a joint statement released through Netflix.

Jeon Do Yeon expressed hope that the award would fuel director Lee Chang Dong’s creative momentum going forward, adding that she’s already curious what he’ll create next. Sul Kyung Gu kept his reaction simple and heartfelt, saying he felt genuinely moved and proud just to have been part of the project. Zo In Sung credited the win to the broader dedication of everyone who continues supporting Korean cinema, while Cho Yeo Jeong thanked the director and expressed hope the film would soon reach a wider audience.

What “Possible Love” Is About

The film follows two married couples — a recently laid-off worker and his wife, alongside a documentary filmmaker and her husband — whose lives intertwine during the making of a documentary, forcing all four to confront hidden desires and contrasting realities they’d otherwise avoid.
