Nations League 2025 Final: Portugal Conquer Nations League Again as Ronaldo and Nuno Mendes Lead Seleção to Historic Triumph on Penalties

Portugal etched their name into UEFA Nations League history by becoming the first side to win the tournament twice, overcoming Spain in a high-octane final at Munich Football Arena.

The match ended 2-2 after extra time, and Roberto Martínez’s men held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out, triumphing 5-3 to lift the coveted silverware for a second time following their inaugural victory in 2019.

First-Half Fireworks in Munich

The stage was set for an electric encounter as both sides carried momentum from dramatic semi-final wins. Portugal’s João Neves threatened early, but Spain’s Pedri and Nico Williams responded in kind, narrowly missing opportunities during an enthralling first 20 minutes.

Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who had been relatively subdued in a captivating battle with Nuno Mendes, provided the breakthrough. His deflected cross led to Martin Zubimendi poking the ball home after a scramble in the box – a moment that reflected Spain’s sharpness and Portugal’s vulnerability in transition.

But Nuno Mendes, rising to the occasion, answered emphatically. Latching onto a Pedro Neto pass from distance, the dynamic full-back blew past Oscar Mingueza and drilled an angled finish beyond Unai Simón to level the match and score his first-ever international goal.

Oyarzabal and Ronaldo Trade Blows

Just before the interval, Spain restored their lead. Pedri drove through midfield and slipped in Mikel Oyarzabal, who coolly clipped the ball past Diogo Costa. Oyarzabal’s strike added to an impressive resume, having now scored in the 2021 and 2025 Nations League finals and the winner at UEFA EURO 2024.

Spain, competing in a record third consecutive Nations League final, had netted 25 goals throughout the campaign — more than any side in a single edition — and looked to be in control. However, the introduction of Rúben Neves and Nélson Semedo after the break brought stability and renewed intensity for the Seleção.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the first player aged over 40 to score and feature in a Nations League final, equalised in iconic fashion. Nuno Mendes, yet again influential, burst down the left and delivered a deflected cross that found Ronaldo. The veteran striker held off Marc Cucurella and smashed home from close range for his eighth goal in the tournament and his 138th international strike overall.

Defensive Steel and Late Drama

Despite Ronaldo limping off before full time, Portugal pushed forward. Semedo spurned an early extra-time opportunity while substitute Rafael Leão added spark down the flank. The best chance fell to Diogo Jota, whose late header sailed just over the bar.

At the other end, Spain continued to probe, but lacked the ruthlessness they displayed earlier in the campaign. Bernardo Silva, making his 26th Nations League appearance – equalling Gianluigi Donnarumma’s competition record – remained a calming influence for Portugal as tensions escalated.

Penalty Shoot-Out Seals Portuguese Glory

With the scores tied after 120 minutes, penalties beckoned. Both teams converted their first three spot-kicks with poise. Then came the pivotal moment: Álvaro Morata, Spain’s captain, stepped up only to be denied by Diogo Costa’s crucial save.

Rúben Neves made no mistake with the following kick, blasting in the decider to ignite jubilant celebrations. Portugal had done it – a comeback victory sealed through resilience, courage, and a blend of youthful energy and veteran know-how led by Spanish Coach Roberto Martinez who had his fair share of doubters to shush as well.

Spain Fall Short Again

Luis de la Fuente’s side, aiming for back-to-back major tournament triumphs, fell just short. Lacking the usual flair and sharpness in midfield, Spain found themselves outgunned by a Portugal side that knew when to strike and when to suffer.

There was no miracle ending this time. No spark from Morata, no late brilliance from the bench. Spain’s proud 24-match competitive unbeaten streak ended with history slipping through their grasp.

Yeremy Pino, Mikel Merino, and Unai Simón – stars of Spain’s last three Nations League finals (2021, 2023, 2025) – will now carry the burden of a third heartbreak.
