Operation Sindoor: Indian Airports Closed – Srinagar Temporarily Closed

In a significant development following India’s bold military action, Operation Sindoor, several airports across North India—including Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, and Amritsar—have been temporarily closed, leading to widespread flight cancellations and rerouting. This move comes as Indian armed forces launched precision strikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

What Is Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor is India’s strategic response to recent terror attacks, aimed at dismantling terror camps and infrastructure across nine identified sites in Pakistan and PoK. The operation marks a historic and decisive step by the Indian military to safeguard national security and retaliate against terror activities.

Impact on Air Travel: Flight Cancellations and Rerouting

Following the launch of Operation Sindoor, airlines have taken precautionary measures to ensure passenger safety and comply with airspace restrictions:

• Air India has cancelled all flights to and from Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot until noon on May 7, 2025. Additionally, two international flights originally destined for Amritsar were diverted to Delhi.
• IndiGo reported disruptions affecting flights to Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Bikaner, Jodhpur, and Gwalior, urging passengers to check flight status before heading to airports.
• Air India Express confirmed cancellations for flights to and from Amritsar, Jammu, Srinagar, and Hindon until midday on May 7.
• Akasa Air also cancelled its Srinagar flights amid the evolving situation.

Most airlines are avoiding Pakistani airspace for overflights, which is expected to cause further disruptions in the coming days.

Why Are Airports Closed?

The temporary closure of these airports is a precautionary security measure in response to the ongoing military operations and heightened tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). The government and armed forces are prioritizing civilian safety while maintaining operational readiness.

What Should Travelers Do?

If you have travel plans involving the affected airports, it is crucial to:

• Check your flight status regularly with your airline.
• Stay updated on official announcements from airport authorities.
• Plan for possible delays or cancellations and consider alternative travel arrangements.

Broader Context: Operation Sindoor’s Strategic Significance

Operation Sindoor is not just a military strike but a message of India’s resolve to combat terrorism decisively. The operation targeted nine terror sites, aiming to dismantle networks responsible for attacks on Indian soil. This action has drawn widespread attention both domestically and internationally, with many world leaders and Indian-American lawmakers voicing support for India’s right to defend itself.

Conclusion

The temporary closure of airports in North India, including Srinagar, is a direct consequence of India’s robust response to terror threats through Operation Sindoor. While this has caused disruptions in air travel, it underscores the government’s commitment to national security and the safety of its citizens.
