The long-awaited Retro Trailer has finally landed, and it’s everything fans of Suriya and Kartik Subbaraj could ask for—loud, lively, and loaded with attitude. Tapping into the roots of classic Indian gangster flicks while injecting a bold, contemporary twist, the film’s preview sets the stage for a colorful showdown between love and violence.

With a vibrant aesthetic, a compelling emotional core, and an ensemble cast oozing charisma, Retro is gearing up to be a defining entry in this year’s action-comedy lineup.

A Pledge of Peace in a World of Chaos

The Retro Trailer opens with an emotional vow—Suriya’s character, a flashy local don, makes a heartfelt promise to his partner, portrayed by Pooja Hegde. Determined to leave his turbulent lifestyle behind, he assures her of a future free from bloodshed.

However, that resolution quickly unravels as chaos follows him at every turn. Whether it’s an accidental brawl or an intentional beatdown, his path is riddled with confrontation. The contrast between his words and actions forms the emotional backbone of the story.

Kartik Subbaraj Unleashes His Signature Style

Known for pushing genre boundaries, Kartik Subbaraj infuses the Retro Trailer with a kaleidoscope of visuals and a madcap tone. From dynamic action sequences to stylized moments of comedy, every frame reflects his directorial identity.

Subbaraj, who last helmed the critically acclaimed Jigarthanda Double X, appears to be leaning into a more eccentric narrative this time. The film’s tagline, Love, Laughter and War, echoes throughout the trailer, teasing a layered plot wrapped in humor and grit.

Vibrant Cast Brings Depth to the Madness

The Retro Trailer also offers glimpses of formidable supporting players—Joju George, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, and Nasser. Each actor seems to inhabit roles filled with menace, mischief, or mystery. These characters enhance the complex web surrounding Suriya’s protagonist, hinting at power struggles and betrayals lurking in the background. Their presence ensures that Retro won’t just be a solo hero journey but a well-rounded tale with shifting loyalties and hidden motives.

Technical Brilliance Lights Up the Screen

Much like its title, the Retro Trailer is a visual explosion. Shreyaas Krishna’s cinematography bursts with bold colors, capturing chaotic city streets, smoky hideouts, and romantic interludes with equal flair.

Complementing the visuals is Santhosh Narayanan’s pulsating score, which blends rustic rhythms with modern beats. Shafique Mohamed Ali’s razor-sharp editing helps maintain a breathless pace, giving audiences a high-voltage taste of what the full feature has to offer.

Suriya’s Emotional Words Steal the Spotlight

During the trailer launch event in Chennai, Suriya stole hearts with a touching tribute to his wife Jyothika, who is also the film’s co-producer. “There’ll be numerous layers to the film – love, laughter and war, enjoy it. I love you all (fans and the audience). I’m here today because of you all. I’m here because of your love.“

“And of course, I also thank my kannadi poo Jo. My journey wouldn’t be as joyous without her,” he said. The film even includes a track titled Kannadi Poove, clearly a nod to their enduring partnership.

Looking for Redemption After Kanguva

After the lukewarm reception of Kanguva, where Suriya played dual roles of a tribal warrior and bounty hunter, Retro is being seen as a critical career reset. The Retro Trailer reflects a complete tonal shift—from somber to playful, from heavy to high-spirited. Fans who were left disappointed previously now have reason to rejoice, with many already praising the trailer’s energy and originality.

Scheduled to release on May 1, 2025, Retro promises a feast of emotions, action, and offbeat storytelling. The Retro Trailer positions the film as a rollercoaster ride filled with charisma, chaos, and charm. With Kartik Subbaraj at the helm, Suriya in top form, and a storyline juggling love, conflict, and comedy, Retro might just be the genre-bending success that this summer needs.
