Vinod Kambli – Sunil Gavaskar Fulfils Promise: Vinod Kambli to Receive ₹30,000 Monthly Aid from CHAMPS Foundation

Vinod Kambli : In a heartwarming gesture that echoes the spirit of true sportsmanship, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has extended a helping hand to former teammate Vinod Kambli, who has been battling severe health issues and financial hardship. Gavaskar, through his CHAMPS Foundation, will provide Kambli with ₹30,000 per month for life, starting April 1, 2025. Additionally, Kambli will receive ₹30,000 annually for medical expenses.

The move comes after Gavaskar met Kambli and his doctors earlier this year and vowed to assist him during a difficult phase—one marked by multiple hospitalizations and past financial instability.

A Career of Highs and Hardships

Vinod Kambli, who made his India debut in 1993, was one of the most promising left-handed batters of his era. With 17 Tests and 104 ODIs, he scored 1,084 Test runs and 2,477 ODI runs, including back-to-back double centuries—a rare feat in Indian cricket history. However, post-retirement, his life took a turbulent turn.

From substance abuse allegations to legal troubles, Kambli faced numerous challenges that led to a significant decline in his financial well-being. The health toll has been no less severe, with the former cricketer undergoing two heart surgeries, rehab sessions, and multiple hospitalizations due to urinary infections and brain clots.

Gavaskar’s CHAMPS Foundation Steps In

Gavaskar’s CHAMPS Foundation, created in 1999, aims to support former international athletes in need. Kambli is now the second cricketer to benefit from this initiative, the first being the late Salim Durani.

At a recent event at Shivaji Park—the inauguration of coach Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial—Gavaskar noticed Kambli’s deteriorating condition and made a public promise to help. True to his word, he coordinated with Kambli’s doctors and ensured the funds would start flowing this April.

A New Chapter of Dignity

Along with a BCCI pension of ₹30,000, Kambli will now have a combined monthly income of ₹60,000—offering some stability after years of financial uncertainty.

This act of kindness by Sunil Gavaskar is more than just financial assistance—it’s a testament to the solidarity and brotherhood that sports can foster long after the spotlight fades.
